Barbara Nelson, Board Chair

I choose the Aiken SPCA as a charity to spend my time and financial resources on because of the organization’s commitment to help animals and the community as well.

Animal overpopulation affects all of us, whether we realize it or not. It can be prevented, and the Board of Trustees is working hard to educate the public and decision makers in government that it is in the best interest of taxpayers to fund proven methods of combating the epidemic of overpopulation rather than just reacting to it by picking more animals off the streets and impounding them.

I like working with well organized non-profits that are transparent in their accountability to donors, and that have strong boards made up of diverse, successful people who take their commitments seriously.

Helping animals is a selfless effort and a passion I know the staff, volunteers, donors, and board members all share. It is for those reasons and many more that I agreed to serve on the board of the Aiken Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals.

This photo is of me and my beagle, Quixote. My husband and I share our home with four other shelter dogs, two cats, three horses, and a flock of rescued ducks and geese.
